Irma's incursion: Utter destruction at Virgin Gorda's Bitter End – high-def video

VIRGIN GORDA, BVI – More heart-breaking video of Bitter End, a favorite vacation destination of many sailors around the world, and home of the famously cool Bitter End Yacht Club. Bitter End is at the easterly end of Virgin Gorda and available only by water, hence the name. From their Facebook page, and sadly prophetic given Irma's impact, "Founded in the 1970s as a family retreat, Bitter End Yacht Club is world-renowned for its sense of adventure, love of the water, appreciation for nature and dedication to friends and family. Named for its iconic location in the British Virgin Islands at the 'end of the line,' Bitter End is the final island outpost before the Caribbean Sea meets the open Atlantic Ocean."

The good news from the BEYC Facebook Page posted Thursday after Irma had passed: We are grateful to report that our crew on the ground at BEYC is safe. We are deeply saddened by the events that have taken place in the last 24 hours and our hearts and thoughts are with our friends and neighbors surrounding the North Sound, on Virgin Gorda, the entire BVI community, everyone in the Caribbean effected by Irma. Hurricane Irma passed through the northeast Caribbean, the BVI, and Virgin Gorda yesterday, and preliminary reports advise that the island, along with the rest of the BVI and surrounding areas, has sustained significant damage. Communication with the island has been severely compromised due to the storm, and as such we are still awaiting word on the extent of storm’s impact. We are actively monitoring the situation, and will post further updates as they become available. We thank everyone for their on-going thoughts and support through this difficult time.
