GOVCUP: Extensive live TV coverage kicks off Monday evening with a light-hearted introduction and la

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (#1162) – The 53rd edition of Balboa Yacht Club’s prestigious international youth match racing championship kicks off at 8:00p PDT Monday with live TV coverage of the traditional "Meet the Teams" show at the Welcome Dinner. It's a a light-hearted introduction and laugh-filled roast of the teams by emcee Andy Rose. This year’s Morning Shows, Wednesday through Saturday at 9:00a, will include for the first time the daily Sailors Meetings with PRO Dr. Don Becker and Chief Umpire John Pratt.

The Semi-finals and Finals will be covered live on Friday and Saturday beginning at 11:30a, in the Pacific Ocean off Newport Beach, and running through the afternoon. After racing each day, a press conference with the top skippers will be aired live back at BYC, plus the awards ceremony Saturday afternoon.

All TV coverage will be live-streamed to the GovCup Facebook page – free to air, no FB account or membership required.

In addition to the nine live shows outlined in the graphic above, on Tuesday our regular TFE LIVE will be live-streamed from Balboa YC, as usual at 1:00p (1300 Pacific / 2000 UTC) on our Sailing Illustrated Facebook page.

The all-volunteer GovCup TV team is led by Chris Bretschger with commentators Andy Rose and Tom Ehman. Gov Cup vet Harrison Vandervort (USA) will join as our roving reporter on a camera boat. With the exception of Harrison, and the absence of Max Moosmann and Greg Newman who are on the 50th Edition Transpac Race to Hawaii, Chris has reassembled the same team that produced the popular live coverage of the US National Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup at San Diego Yacht Club the last weekend in June.

With multiple GovCup runner-up Leonard Takahashi (NZL) returning and 11 other top skippers trying to best him and his veteran team of Josh Wijohn (NZL) and Taylor Balogh (NZL) representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, regatta chair Christine Prigmore Robertson says it’s the best line-up of teams in the GovCup’s long and storied history.

Early each evening Susan Wattson Kenney will issue a detailed press release of the day’s action and results, accompanied by beaut photos from Mary Longpre and Tom Walker. If you’re not already on the GovCup media list, please contact Susan at susankenney9094@gmail.com.

Bottom line — we do it for the kids, their families and friends, our worldwide cadre of GovCup fans, and for the love of our great sport, especially “yute” match racing. If you can’t watch live, each show will be available for replay immediately after we go off the air, as always on the Governor’s Cup FB page.
