Photo of the Day: Setting summer sun shines on a Six

VANCOUVER – Just one of many beaut photos forwarded this week by Lin Parks (CAN) of some of the 6-Metre yachts already gathered at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and tuning up for their upcoming Worlds with the "entry list of sailing royalty, literally" that your Ed. wrote about earlier this week. We'll be posting more in due course, and appreciate very much Lin's contribution.

The 6-Metre Class, like the 12s, and J-Class use the old-school (1906) IYRU sail codes, not the more-recently adopted (in 1992) three-letter Olympic codes now proffered by World Sailing. Under the classic system, "K" was for United Kingdom, "KA" Australia, "KC" Canada, "KZ" New Zealand (hence the famous fiberglass Kiwi 12s KZ-3, KZ-5 and KZ-7 built by Michael Fay (NZL) for the 1987 America's Cup), "US" for the USA, F for France, and so on. "I" for Italy.

Dick Enersen (USA), former AC winning crewman (CONSTELLATION, 1964), videographer and longtime friend, identified I-72 for us as NUVOLARI, the 1978 Norlin design for the Bassani brothers (ITA), now being sailed in Vancouver by Ron Holland (NZL) in preparation for next month's World Championship.
