SuperFoiler: Is this yacht racing's 'new new thing' or another expensive flash in the pa

SYDNEY – First the sailors were being called pilots a la Formula 1. Now Jack Macartney, COO of the new SuperFoiler "Grand Prix circuit" set to be held in Australia during their 2018 summer, says, "After seeing the Eurfoflex trio [the new Aussie-allstar team of Glenn Ashby, Iain Jensen and Nathan Outteridge] in action I think it's not a stretch to call these blokes aquatic astronauts – they really are ready to blast off."

More from the advertorial running today on Sail-World.com, "The Euroflex and Kleenmaid will be joined by four other SuperFoilers set to be launched in time for a 2018 summer Grand Prix circuit. All six machines will be vying for glory and the storied Ben Lexcen Trophy - which will be presented to the boat with the highest cumulative total after the five regattas."

So these SuperFoilers are not yachts or boats but machines.

I guess we can see for ourselves soon as the racing will be livestreamed on Australia's Plus7 with "immersive post-produced coverage airing on 7mate. Channel 7 will also air a half an hour special on the SuperFoiler journey on December 26 as part of their Sydney to Hobart race coverage."

Called the "America's Cup Dream Team," Australians Glenn Ashby, Iain Jensen and Nathan Outteridge will be the "aquatic astronauts" piloting the Euroflex – one of six "machines" in the inaugural SuperFoiler Grand Prix circuit competing for the "storied" Ben Lexcen Trophy, that will be awarded for the first time to the circuit's 2018 winners.
