Olympics: The Class that best epitomizes Citius, Altius, Fortius

SAN FRANCISCO (#1188) – As we reported on Tuesday's TFE LIVE (this link takes you to the 1h27m mark of the show where we briefly discussed this) the pictograms for the 2020 Olympic sports were announced in Tokyo yesterday. Obviously, the accompanying photo is the 2020 Sailing pictogram. I gave it our Bravo Zulu – naval talk/signaling for Well Done. Why?

Because of the clear resemblance to what many consider the best Olympic class of all time, and that best epitomizes the Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius.

Citius, Altius, Fortius, indeed. Elvstrom. Bruder. Bertrand (AUS and USA). Coutts. Doreste. Kusznierewicz. Ainslie. And many, many more.

So, as I and many others around the world are asking, why has the leadership of World Sailing pushed so hard to eliminate this class from the Olympics after the 2020 Olympics? Is it because the WS President says they can't "activate" (make money from) such classes – that are owned and operated, not by World Sailing, but by the sailors themselves? Or because World Sailing's non-sailing CEO wouldn't know a good sailing class from an average or bad one, let alone one that epitomizes Citius, Altius, Fortius?

Which logo do you like best? Regardless what you think of sailing's, it certainly does stand out among all the 2020 pictograms. "Bravo Zulu" to the Tokyo organizers.
